My husband Darrin and I started Mahalo Properties to realize the potential we saw for real estate investment in the Alberta market. Mahalo now has investment partners, from all walks of life, from BC to Saskatchewan. Since joining the Real Estate Investment Network (REIN) in 2012, I have developed a systems-minded approach to property investment which provides a solid foundation upon which to build the portfolio. Since starting my membership, I have purchased twelve investment properties totaling over $12.5M. My goal is to grow the portfolio to produce $750,000 in annual rental income in 10 years’ time.
The name “Mahalo” is Hawaiian for “an expression of gratitude.” It is an appropriate word for how we approach business at Mahalo as we have deep gratitude for the investment partners and tenants we work with to achieve common goals.
With a master’s degree in Kinesiology, specializing in clinical populations, I worked in the health industry for 16 years. As a Project Manager in health care, I learned administrative and organizational management skills which I now apply in running Mahalo full time. I personally manage our rental properties, recruit tenants, and oversee our maintenance systems. As a real estate expert, I analyze and acquire top-performing properties, and screen and recruit joint venture partners. Mahalo is a strong supporter of Habitat for Humanity. We love the Habitat program because they help families who wouldn’t normally be able to buy a home become homeowners. More often than not, this breaks the cycle of poverty for families and enables them to be successful in work, school or starting their own business.
We have watched this program change lives while creating safe and healthy environments for kids to thrive in. We love the ‘teach a man to fish’ approach: the program requires homeowners to provide 500 hours of sweat equity toward their home build. Once the homeowner takes possession, they pay a ‘mortgage payment’ (a set proportion of their income) that goes directly back to Habitat to do it all over again for another family.
Kristal mobilizes a crew of women annually for Habitat’s Women Build, which is a day staffed with solely women volunteers who build for the day. She aims to do this annually and eventually expand these builds to gather people together from where we live to travel to other parts of the world to build for Habitat.
